Are Yorkshire Terriers Hypoallergenic?
While there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog breed, some dogs produce less dander and saliva than others, making them better choices for people with allergies. Yorkshire Terriers are one of the breeds that are often considered to be hypoallergenic. These small dogs have silky coat that does not shed much and produce less dander than many other breeds.
In addition, Yorkies are known for being affectionate and loyal companions. As a result, they make excellent pets for people with allergies. While they may require more grooming than other breeds, their low-shedding coat and sweet temperament make them worth the extra effort.

How Big Do Yorkies Get?
Yorkies, or Yorkshire Terriers, are a small breed of dog known for their long, silky coat. Despite their small size, Yorkies are energetic, lively dogs that are great companions. But just how big do they get? Adult Yorkies typically weigh between 4 and 7 pounds and stand between 8 and 9 inches tall at the shoulder. However, there is some variation in size within the breed.
Some Yorkies may be larger or smaller than average, but most will fall within the typical weight and height range. Thanks to their small size, Yorkies are well-suited for life in an apartment or other small space. They don’t need a lot of exercise, but they enjoy short walks and play sessions. So if you’re looking for a pint-sized puppy with a big personality, a Yorkie might be the perfect dog!

How Were Yorkshire Terriers Bred For?
The Yorkshire Terrier was originally bred in England in the 19th century to catch rats in clothing mills. They were also used as watchdogs in coal mines and as hunting dogs. They were bred to be small, so they could fit into small spaces, and were also bred to be fearless so they would not be afraid of rats. Yorkshire Terriers are still popular ratters and make good Companion dogs.
They are among the most popular breeds of dogs in the United States. Yorkshire Terriers are usually between 3 and 7 pounds and are 12 to 16 inches tall. They have a silky, shiny blue and gold coat or black and tan. They do not shed much and only need to be groomed every few weeks. Yorkshire Terriers are energetic, affectionate, and loving dogs that make great pets for families with children.

Why is My Yorkshire Terrier Shaking?
There are a few reasons why your Yorkshire Terrier may be shaking. One possibility is that she’s cold. This is especially likely if she’s shaking more outside or in a drafty room. If this is the case, provide her with a warm blanket or sweater to help keep her comfortable. Another possibility is that she’s nervous or scared. If she’s shaking and hiding, this may be the case.
Try to provide her with a safe, calming environment and see if her shaking subsides. If she’s still shaking after these measures, she may have an underlying health condition, such as an infection or neurological disorder. In this case, it’s best to take her to the vet for an exam.

How Often Should I Bath My Yorkshire Terrier?
The answer to this question depends on several factors, including age, health, and activity level. Generally, younger dogs and puppies must be bathed more frequently than older dogs. This is because they are more likely to get dirty, their skin is still developing, and they may be more sensitive to soap and detergent.
Active dogs may also need to be bathed more often, as they are more likely to roll in mud or get sweaty during a long walk. On the other hand, seniors and those with health conditions such as allergies or diabetes may need to be bathed less often, as their skin can be easily irritated. If you’re unsure how often to bathe your dog, consult your veterinarian.

Why Do They Dock a Yorkshire Terriers Tail?
If you’ve ever seen a Yorkshire Terrier, you may have noticed that their tails are often docked. While this may seem like a cruel practice, there is a reason behind it. Docking was originally done to help prevent injuries to the dog’s tail. In the past, many dogs were used for hunting and often had to squeeze into tight spaces. A long tail could easily get caught or injured in these confined spaces. By docking the tail, hunters were able to avoid these potential injuries.
Today, docking is primarily cosmetic, although it can still help to prevent injuries in some working dogs. Some people also believe a shorter tail is less likely to develop genetic health problems. No matter the reason, docking remains controversial, and many animal rights activists argue that it should be banned altogether.

Choosing a Yorkie Puppy in Minnesota
Minnesota winters are long and cold, and that matters for a dog that weighs only a few pounds. Yorkies have a fine, silky coat rather than a thick undercoat, so they chill quickly. Most owners in the state keep a warm sweater or coat on hand for outdoor trips. They also use indoor potty solutions on the coldest days. Ask any breeder or rescue how their puppies have been raised and whether they are used to household life and cold-weather routines.
Whether you are looking near Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, or Rochester, it is worth meeting the puppy and its mother in person if you can. A healthy Yorkie puppy should be alert, playful, and curious, with bright eyes, clean ears, and a smooth, steady gait.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy or Adopt
A good breeder or rescue will be happy to answer your questions. Do not hesitate to ask, and be cautious of anyone who avoids them. Useful questions include:
- How old is the puppy, and has it had its first vaccinations and deworming?
- Has a veterinarian examined the puppy, and can you see the health records?
- Can you meet the parents, or at least the mother?
- What is the expected adult weight?
- What happens if the puppy turns out to have a health problem?
Be careful with the word “teacup.” It is a marketing term, not an official size category. Extremely small puppies can be more fragile, so focus on health and temperament before size.
Common Health Concerns in Small Yorkies
Small Yorkies can be prone to certain issues. Low blood sugar is a risk in very young and tiny puppies, so regular small meals matter. Other concerns include dental crowding and tartar buildup, luxating patella (a slipping kneecap), and a sensitive digestive system. Regular vet visits and daily tooth care go a long way toward keeping your dog comfortable.
Because of their size, Yorkies can be injured by a fall from furniture or by rough handling. Supervise young children and teach them to hold the puppy gently and close to the ground.
Grooming and Daily Care
Yorkie hair is closer to human hair than to typical dog fur. It needs brushing several times a week to prevent tangles, and a bath every few weeks. Many owners choose a shorter “puppy cut” to make upkeep easier, especially during muddy spring thaws or salty winter walks. Wipe paws after walks in winter to remove road salt, which can irritate skin.
Start training and socialization early. Yorkies are smart and confident, and they can be barky if not guided. Short, positive sessions with treats work best.
Looking in Neighboring States
If you cannot find the right match in Minnesota, widening your search may help. You can browse our other state pages, such as Yorkie puppies for sale in Colorado or Yorkie puppies for sale in Arizona. Whatever you choose, plan to see the puppy and its environment before you commit, and avoid paying for a puppy you have not seen.
